¡@It has been more than 10 years since Central Trading & Development Corporation and the Ho Chi Minh City Government jointly established the Saigon South Urban Development Project in the early 90's. Thinking back, who would have believed that the shape of an international standard new city would emerge on what was once marshland. The success of the project is undoubted.
¡@Saigon South Project offers many unique characteristics when compared to the average foreign investments in Vietnam. It has been instrumental in introducing international urban planning concepts, advanced architectural designs, applicable construction methods and techniques, high quality machinery equipments and construction materials, innovative management and service-oriented concepts, and real estate development concepts from pre-sale units, mortgage, to property management, just to name a few. These new concepts will continue to play a vital role in the overall economic development of Vietnam. In addition to these, two special features impressed me the most in the past 10 years.
¡@First is the determination to achieve perfection through constant innovation. Under this principle, improvements and modifications were adopted throughout the process of shaping Saigon South. Most significantly, this principle has become the motto of all the staff.
¡@Second is the insistence on localization. Local staffs were put through systematic training via exposure to various sub-projects. Those selected personnel were then promoted to managerial positions according to their areas of specialty to take on greater responsibilities.
¡@The most admirable and touching part of the projects is the dedication of the foreign staff in the past 10 years. They gave up their high quality life style, quality time with their family, and compromise their children's education to contribute and dedicate their expertise to this marshland. Most of all, my highest respect to the many female staff who gave the best part of their lives to this project.
¡@As this project successfully unfolds, one should never forget the pioneers, especially the masterminds who have created this project.
¡@Mr. Lawrence Ting was a virtuous leader, with clear-cut principles. He was an intellectual leader who never abandoned any chance of exploration and innovation, and accepts challenges with courage and determination. He was strict to his employees, but the staff soon learned to appreciate the same strictness he placed on himself before others, as well as his sincerity, honesty and the passion to help others. His love for his wife has been an exemplary model for all the people around him. These personal charms have won him sincere loyalty from the entire staff.
¡@Mr. Ferdinand Tsien is a respectable and well-received gentleman. Many people opened up to him because of his benevolence and magnanimous personality. Honesty has always been his principle and he required his staff to do the same. He is a devoted father and his outstanding children serve as the best example of good parenting.
¡@Of course, the road to success of any projects is not easy. There will be obstacles that come in the way. It is regrettable that some of these obstacles are created by men. If one can understand the hardships and adversities the project has to overcome in the last ten years, one will respect and value others' contribution.
¡@I sincerely hope that the difficulties are short-lived, just like dark clouds can never obstruct the sunshine. Phu My Hung Corporation and the Saigon South Urban Development Project aim to improve people's living standard and to create a desirable living environment. This is the common goal pursued by the people, and it will not be stopped nor failed.
¡@Future will be the judge of the past incidences, and I firmly believe the success of Saigon South will provide the proper judgment.
